What Makes a Successful Franchisee?
The
present retail rush fuelled by the booming
proliferation of retail brands and increasing
consumer spending has given a new fillip
to the franchising business, throwing up
thousands of successful entrepreneurs across
the country. While estimates about the exact
size of the retail business in India vary
widely, AT Kearney predicts that it will
touch the 800,000-crore mark in 2005 while
FICCI on the other hand has estimated the
total retail business to be Rs 11,00,000
crores or 40% of the GDP.

Is
Mall Model Conducive to Shopping?
Notwithstanding
the footfalls they attract, shopping malls
are throwing up a new challenge to retailers
and marketers. That is to direct the traffic
to their respective stores once the shoppers
step into malls. Most of the shoppers just
laze around, grab a sandwich or coffee,
do some window-shopping or simply go for
a movie. In such an emerging scenario, the
moot question is whether the mall model
is skewed towards F&B and entertainment
than shopping. In an interactive session
moderated by Kapil Mohan Dhingra, Munish
Baldev, CEO, EDM, Mall Management Co.; Vikas
Attri, Technical Advisor (Operations) ,
Nirula's Corner House Private Limited; Neeraj
Katoch, Head, Franchising Operations, Dominos;
Mahendra Kumar Goel, Franchisee, B.C. Sen
Jewellers, and Rajesh Sodhi, Manager (North),
Provogue, debate the issue threadbare. |

There
Is A Case For FDI In Retailing
After
the announcement of the official permission
for 100% foreign direct investment in the
construction sector through automatic route,
there was a general expectation that this
kind of concession would be allowed in the
retail sector soon, may be in milder doses.
But the Finance Minister made no mention of
any such thing in the Union Budget. So don't
expect Wal-Mart or J.C. Penny to grace your
neighbourhood any time soon. But all said
and done, retail trade will benefit immensely
if FDI is welcomed with minimum strings attached. |

Footwear Majors Step Up Retail Operations

The
Indian footwear industry has witnessed stellar
growth riding piggyback on the ongoing retail
revolution. Leading foreign brands have been
quick to sit up and take notice of India's
vast potential for high-end footwear, reports
Rajesh Kulkarni.
Until
about two decades ago, buying a pair of shoes
entailed a trip to the nearest Bata or Liberty
shoes store. With just a handful of brands
and designs to choose from, buying footwear
was a relatively simple and inexpensive affair.

Anchors
Pay Little Rent But Aren't Unimportant
Occupy
more, pay less. This may sound
as business-like as ‘buy cheap,
sell dear' but in reality it's
no opportunity-driven tactic.
It is just that anchors occupy
nearly 44% of a typical mall
area but contribute only 27%
towards the rentals. But they
have their own plus sides also.
This
fact has been unveiled in a
study conducted by Chesterton
Meghraj International Property
Consultants on four such spots.

A Boon
There
is a close relationship between
real estate and retail. Priyanka
Kapoor spoke to leading retailers
and real estate developers to

a logical case for allowing
FDI in retail particularly after
the government allowed 100%
FDI in the construction sector.
